This term year 1 have been focusing on ‘Happiness’, we started by reading a story ‘The Bucket Filler’. We talked about what makes a ‘bucket filler’ and a ‘bucket dipper’. We all aim to be ‘bucket fillers’ by saying kind things and looking after each other. No one wanted to be a ‘bucket dipper’, this means taking peoples good feelings by saying mean things or leaving someone out of games.
This gave the children opportunity to discuss friendships and how to be a good friend to both peers and adults in class. A friendship web allowed us to discuss our friends and why they are important to us. This book gave us many talking points to develop personal and social skills as well as class rules. We looked at similarities and differences between ourselves and others by using picture and scenario cards. We challenged children to empathise with the characters in the pictures and related feelings to their personal experiences.
