Reading in Reception

Reading in Reception

The children are reading every week in guided reading sessions and all the children are taking home a Bug Club reading book weekly. The children are also listened to once a week reading their Storyworld book. The children are very enthusiastic about reading and recognise that it is an important time in the week. This term we have introduced a new initiative by inviting into school a therapy dog to sit with the children as they read. Idris Nowell (a parent at the school) has been kindly volunteering one session a week with Seren the therapy dog. Seren alternates weekly between classes and sits with the children during their guided reading sessions. The children read with an adult in their guided reading group and then take turns to sit with Seren and read a few pages to her without the pressure of reading to an adult and without fear of being corrected. The children have really enjoyed reading with Seren and she has added great value to these reading sessions.
