Reception Class Summer Term 2017

Reception Class Summer Term 2017

Following with the children’s interests we started the term learning all about dinosaurs. The children loved our dinosaur dig area where they had the opportunity to role play using the dinosaurs, excavate dinosaur fossils and make words from the bones they had found. They also enjoyed learning more about dinosaurs by using the various information and fact books we had in class.
During some of our Forest school and outdoor learning sessions we searched for clues during a dinosaur hunt and found dinosaur prints. We used these prints to develop our mathematical skills. We estimated how many pairs it would take to fill each print. This activity helped the children to practise counting in 2’s, estimating and checking their answers, number recognition and number formation skills.
We enjoyed reading the Harry and the Bucketful of dinosaur’s series of books. We developed our reading skills by visualising what Harry might have found up the attic and made predictions on what would happen after Harry left his bucketful of dinosaurs on the train.
The children designed their own bucket for Harry and were very creative using various craft materials when designing a new dinosaur themselves. These designs were then used as a stimulus to support the children’s oracy and writing skills where they had the opportunity to talk and write descriptions about the dinosaurs they had created.
Leading from the book ‘Harry and the dinosaurs say Raaar’, when Harry and T-Rex visited the dentist, the children had a visit from the Designed to Smile team to learn about the importance of brushing their teeth and the different foods that they should eat to keep their teeth healthy.
