Down's Syndrome

Down's Syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is not a hereditary condition and occurs by chance at the time of conception.

A child / young person with Down's Syndrome will have some degree of learning disability, but the level of ability will be different for every individual.

Next steps

If you are concerned that your child / young person's Down's Syndrome is impacting their learning, talk to your child / young person's school / college. Speak to the class teacher or Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) and they will be able to work with you and work out what happens next. If your child is under 5 years old, you need to speak to your Health Visitor.
