Moderate Learning Difficulties
Learners with moderate learning difficulties will have attainments below expected levels in all or most areas of the curriculum.
Many children with moderate learning difficulties require adaptions to the curriculum as part of universal support and may receive targeted interventions. Learners with moderate learning difficulties need to have their progress monitored to ensure that the support they get remains appropriate.
General signs
There are many signs of Moderate Learning Difficulties; here are some general signs that could indicate your child has a moderate difficulty.
General signs to look for are:
- Have immature listening / attention skills.
- Delays in speech and language skills.
- Difficulty acquiring basic literacy and numeracy skills and other attainments.
- Greater difficulty than their peers with every day tasks.
- Low self-esteem.
- Poor motivation.
- Have some motor co-ordination difficulties.

If you are concerned that your child / young person may have Moderate Learning Difficulty that is impacting their learning, speak to the class teacher or Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) and they will be able to work with you and work out what happens next. If your child is under 5 years old, you need to speak to your Health Visitor.
