Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that mainly affects literacy and language related skills.

General signs

Dyslexia can include difficulties in any combination, or all, of the following areas, despite appropriate teaching and evidence-based intervention:

  • Word reading
  • Spelling
  • Writing
  • Understanding what they have read.

Children and young people with dyslexia may have difficulty remembering information they see and hear which can affect their learning. Dyslexia can also affect other areas such as organisational skills.

Next steps

If you are concerned that your child / young person may have dyslexia and that it is impacting their learning, talk to your child / young person's school / college. Speak to the class teacher or Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo) and they will be able to work with you and work out what happens next. If your child is under 5 years old, you need to speak to your Health Visitor.
